- I served as a Fireman/Engineman on the Huron from 1957-59. I was a cremwember from Buffalo, New York when on May 7th, 1958 the following tragic accident occurred. The following cremwember was drowned, Seaman/BM3 Striker Robert J. Gullickson of Grosse Point on that tragic day. Bob was lost when the lightship's liberty boat was swamped while returning to the lightship from the Port Huron Lifeboat Station. Saved by myself and a small boat crew from the lifeboat station was CS1 (the cook) Vincent J. Disch of Janesville, WI. Gullickson was the only cremwember ever lost at sea during the Huron Lightship's fifty (50) years of duty on the Great Lakes. Seaman Gullickson's remains were never recovered. Although many years have passed since that tragic day, the event is still as clear in my memory and mind as if it occurred . . . . yesterday'. Neil C.
